IP geolocation
An estimate of the location associated with an IP network.
Definition
IP geolocation associates an address with a country, region, city, timezone or approximate coordinates. The estimate describes network context, which may reflect an operator gateway or infrastructure location rather than the person using the connection.
Worked example
A lookup can return location.country_code, location.city and location.timezone. Country profiles aggregate data ranges, ASN assignments and city estimates. These counts describe records, not people.
{
"ip": "1.1.1.1",
"location": {
"country": "Australia",
"country_code": "AU",
"city": "Brisbane",
"timezone": "Australia/Brisbane"
}
}Selected fields from one complete single-IP response. Values describe the address looked up, not the reader’s connection.
API fields
location.countrystring- Country name associated with the network location estimate.
location.country_codestring- Two-letter country code in the location record.
location.citystring- City associated with the network estimate. May be empty.
location.timezonestring- Timezone identifier associated with the location.
Interpretation
VPNs, mobile carrier gateways, satellite links and anycast can separate a user from the recorded network location. Coordinates do not identify a precise home or device location.
