IPv4 address
A 32-bit Internet Protocol address.
Definition
An IPv4 address has 32 bits and is commonly written as four decimal numbers separated by dots. Each component represents eight bits, giving values from 0 through 255. Addresses can identify interfaces or services, and one public address can be shared by many devices.
Worked example
1.1.1.1 is an IPv4 address. A /32 prefix contains one IPv4 address; a /24 contains 256. The network directory starts with /8 profiles so you can move into more specific ranges.
Four octets × 8 bits = 32 bits. A /32 fixes all 32 bits and contains exactly one address.
API fields
ipstring- The address looked up. The own-IP endpoint uses the connecting client’s public address.
Interpretation
A syntactically valid address is not automatically public, routable, active or assigned to a particular user. Private and special-use ranges need separate interpretation.
