IPv6 address
A 128-bit address with hexadecimal notation.
Definition
IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses, usually written as hexadecimal groups separated by colons. Leading zeros can be omitted, and one consecutive run of zero groups can be compressed using a double colon. Equivalent textual forms identify the same address.
Worked example
The expanded and compressed forms below identify the same documentation address. A /64 leaves 64 address bits, so its block size is 2^64. That size is not a count of active devices.
- Expanded address
2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:0001- Compressed address
2001:db8::1- Addresses in a /64
- 18,446,744,073,709,551,616
The two forms identify the same address. 2001:db8::/32 is reserved for documentation; it is not a public lookup example.
API fields
ipstring- The address looked up. The own-IP endpoint uses the connecting client’s public address.
Interpretation
IPv6 does not use an IPv4-style broadcast address. IPQuery accepts a single IPv6 address in the API path and uses the same response fields as IPv4.
